paper written by Marcia Davidson and Gary McKinney that defines
quantitative and symbolic reasoning and indicates which components
should be included in the undergraduate curriculum.
Additional Resources
- The
National Numeracy Network, sponsored by the National Council on
Education in the Disciplines, is "an approach rooted in contexts
across the curriculum rather than in abstractions that resonate only
within mathematics class." Western is a member of this network.
- The
Washington Center for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education is
one of four dissemination sites for the National Numeracy Network.
Western is a member of the Washington Center's consortium of schools.
- The
Center for Mathematics and Quantitative Education at Dartmouth is
another member of the National Numeracy Network. The Center maintains
a large list of course modules that are discipline based to teach
quantitative and symbolic reasoning skills.
