Writing II Course Checklist
WRITING II
Writing courses designated for the GUR Communication and Critical
Analysis area, Block B, and designed to provide instruction in reading
and writing analytically in the context of a discipline, with an emphasis
on the integration of information from sources.
In general, a Writing II course:
- carries 4-5 credits
- has a pre-requisite of English 101, but no other course pre-requisites
- has a pre-requisite of sophomore status*
- has no more than 25 students enrolled
- must be completed prior to the completion of 135 credits
- must be completed with a grade of C- or better
- A department may establish a lower credit pre-requisite, but in no
case should it be less than 25 credits.
Writing II course proposal/syllabus shows evidence of:
- a focus on writing instruction
- an emphasis on writing analytically in the context of a discipline
- opportunities for writing informally and formally
- opportunities for revising conceptually
- opportunities for reader response
- an emphasis on writing strategies, such as
- constructing a topic
- developing a focus or thesis
- selecting, evaluating, and integrating evidence from sources
- formulating organizational schemes
- revising for both clarity and style
- documenting sources
- editing/proofreading for presentation
- an evaluation scheme based primarily on writing performance
