During the 2006-07 academic year, the First Year Blog was created by the Center for Instructional Innovation and the First-year Interest Groups program at Western Washington University. The goal for this project was to provide a medium for entering students to make connections with each other in hopes that this would foster a sense of community early in their college career and ultimately contribute to the success of all first-year students. A special email invitation to participate was sent to all incoming first-year students during the summer. They "auditioned" by posting to a blog regarding some of their hopes for college or about what made them unique. A panel of first-year instructors selected four blog authors. The bloggers turned out to be wonderful contributors to a varied and interesting blog about their first year in college. All first year students and the campus community were invited to visit the blog and comment on the authors’ postings. Only members of the campus community with the ability to log into the campus network were able to post to the blog; however, the postings were available to anyone online as well as via RSS.
