Course Descriptions for Wild Landscape

  • English 238, Society through its Literature: Into the Wild, (Nancy Pagh) 5cr, HUM, CRN: 43813
A thematic approach to literature, with different themes exploring the relationship between literary forms and society. Novels, diaries and nonfiction accounts of people escaping or adventuring "into the wild" have long been both popular with audiences and an essential component of American literature. What fascinates us in these texts and what do we learn from them? What is the author (and ourselves as readers) escaping from in these stories? In English 238 we will consider these, and other questions, as we look at a broad range of classic, contemporary and children's literature about escaping "into the wild."
  • Geology 101 with Lab, Introduction to Geology, (Thor Hansen) 4cr, LSCI, CRN: 43814
Major ideas of modern geoscience; the study of rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, geologic time, the hydrologic cycle; processes that have produced the Earth and its landforms. Some lecture sections will be focused on specific topics within the geological sciences, such as planetary geology, climate and climate change, or National Parks. Includes lab. **Prospective geology majors, students who had high school geology, and those planning to take GEOL 212 should take GEOL 211 in lieu of GEOL 101.**
  • Seminar 101, Perspectives on Learning, (Hui-Ling Chan) 2cr, CRN: 41896
Make connections with professors and peers and examine perspectives across different fields of study. Learn to find and evaluate information and collaborate with peers through discussions, projects, and presentations. Explore academic goals, campus resources, and enhance skills for learning in college.
