The “monsters course” is two linked courses that will cover monsters from both a scientific and humanistic perspective.

“Monsters” are a pervasive and popular subject in our culture. Much mythology is centered around monsters such as dragons and griffins. Movies frequently feature monsters (which may be more or less realistic in terms of their physical possibility) and scientific accounts of genuine monsters such as dinosaurs and giant squids excite the imagination.

Geology and Society and its linked course, English 238 (Society Through its Literature: The Monstrous Body) are designed to investigate the cultural and scientific aspects of monsters. We will explore the overlap and contrast between a scientific and humanistic approach to this subject.

This is an 8-credit General University Requirement course. You will get GUR credit for two GURs. It will meet MTWRF 1-2:20 during Winter Quarter 2003.
