Syllabus

Syllabus - Summer 2005
Dr. Larry Estrada

Course Description

The course will follow a seminar format to review and discuss concepts presented within each of the assigned texts. Students should have read the assigned chapters for each of the sessions. This is extremely important to understand the concepts presented by speakers who will discuss such broad topics as: Mexican politics, history, muralism, environmental concerns and traditional medicine.

The sessions in Morelia will normally meet T-Th from 8:30-10:00 A.M. at an assigned location within CCL or at an appropriate coffee house. In Oaxaca, discussion sessions for the FC-310-V course will generally occur in the late afternoons or early evenings as indicated on the Oaxaca August itinerary (TBA).The format of the class will be divided into General Group Reading Sessions and Small Group Discussion Sessions. Students will be selected to act as facilitators within the small group discussion sessions.

Assigned Texts

Class Assignments

All students will be required to maintain a journal of their experiences, family interactions and class presentations throughout their three week stay in Morelia and two week stay in Oaxaca. Students should maintain a minimum of three entries per week, which will be periodically reviewed by the instructor throughout the travel/internship. Each student will submit his/her entire journal to the instructor upon the culmination of the class session on August 9.

Each student will be required to turn in a 4-5 page reflection paper based on concepts and ideas presented throughout the entire five week class. Although this is not a research paper, it is anticipated that students will be able to cite specific information from each of the readings as well as ideas presented within specific class presentations and by guest lecturers and their instructors at CCL and ICO. The paper will be due on August 12.
Students are required to keep a copy of their papers that will also form the basis for their on-line evaluation through Fairhaven College that is due upon their return.

Upon our return from Mexico, during the fall or winter quarter all FC-310-V students will give a presentation on concepts learned as well as their experiences in Mexico.

Student assessment of Spanish language development will be conducted by the language instructors at CCL. And ICO. These will be available to students upon their culmination of the trip and entered as part of the evaluation process for each student.
